Why You Should Write Yourself a Letter From Your Future Self

Letter From Your Future Self

Prepare yourselves, because things are about to get a little bit woo-woo around here… As you know, I love all things to do with intention setting, spirituality and tapping into the power of the universe. And at the end of 2018 I shared a guide to manifesting success of any kind. One of the tips within that post was to write a letter to yourself from your future self.

Sounds weird? Well, here’s how it works and why, with the end of the year approaching, it’s the perfect time to try out this technique…

I first came across the Letter From Your Future Self activity on a Liz Earle press trip, in fall 2018. After a wonderful yoga class we were invited to write a letter to ourselves, from our future self. We’d date the letter a few months into the future, and use it as way to manifest our short-term hopes and dreams.

Writing down your goals from the perspective of the future – as if you’ve already succeeded in achieving them – is surprisingly therapeutic. And it definitely taps into the law of attraction and the messages shared within The Secret. If you visualise yourself in the place you want to be, it will help the universe take you down that path (I warned you things would get woo-woo).

How to Write a Letter From Your Future Self

As you know, I’ve had a rocky year. I’ve been experiencing major growing pains in my career, and have also been battling with a lot of uncertainty and self-doubt. So, as we move towards the end of the year, it felt like the perfect time to pen another letter from my future self.

This time I dated the letter January 1st, 2020. And Future Ella revealed how she’s in a much better headspace, and managed to found a lot of clarity and inner peace towards the end of 2019.

The letter from your future self doesn’t have to hone in on specifics (I landed my dream job at X / I finally achieved Y / I earned Z amount from freelance work in December) if you don’t want to get too granular. I find it can be just as powerful to tap into the emotions you’ll be experiencing a few months into the future. Feeling more settled, confident, grounded, excited, ambitious etc, etc.

I think it’s such a positive practise to close out the year with. And here’s an example of how to start a letter from your future self:

Dear Ella,

It’s a brand new year, and you’re feeling great. After a challenging couple of months, you’re finally in a great place and feeling more grounded than ever. Towards the end of 2019 everything started to come together and you…

Do you plan to pen a letter from your future self? What other manifestation techniques do you use?

Ouf. I know what my future self would have said to my younger self if my future self was my now self… THROW STUFF OUT NOW! Be ruthless! Have no ruth!

Also, like Ella says, don’t worry, you’ll get it together. Hang in there 🙂

(To put this in context, I’m having a big, Kondo-style tidy and it is killing me. So. Much. Stuff.)
