What 2017 Meant to Me…

Love Knit Coco's Tea Party

And, just like that, it’s the end of the year… I feel like 2017 has flown by! Last week I was scrolling through my Instagram grid and was stunned to revisit images I posted back in March/April. Everything felt like it happened just a week ago. It definitely highlights how important it is to cherish every day, because life moves so quickly.

I went into this year with the desire to make big changes. After living with my parents and saving like crazy, I was determined to get my foot on the property ladder in 2017. It took a lot longer than I expected, and there were so many points throughout the year when I questioned whether it would ever happen. But on December 2nd I finally got the keys to my first home. I move in in January, and I can’t wait to start this new chapter.

I also wanted to make some changes in my professional life, this year. I’ve been blogging since 2006, and spent the majority of 2016 feeling quite miserable and unmotivated. The big questions that keep me up at night are, “What comes next? How do you become more than just a blogger?”

So starting the Let’s Discuss podcast with Monica Welburn has been hugely rewarding. We’ve both loved working in a different medium, and it’s been exciting to tackle a fresh set of challenges. I’m still constantly thinking about what comes next, but podcasting has quietened some of those anxieties. And I feel relieved to be going into 2018 with a positive outlook.

What has 2017 meant to you? Feel free to leave a comment below, if you’d like to share your experiences…

Quick Fire Round

Personal highlight of 2017… Purchasing my first home.

Professional highlight of 2017… Launching the Let’s Discuss podcast with Monica Welburn. And getting into the iTunes top charts in our first 24 hours!

Favourite travel experience in 2017… Visiting Barcelona for the first time this spring, with Monica. It was such a wonderful, girly weekend. I can’t wait to return to the city next year.

Album I played on repeat in 2017… Hero by Maren Morris.

The TV show I loved binge-watching in 2017… I loved the second season of Master of None. And coming in at a close second is Grace and Frankie.

The best book I read in 2017… Lion: A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley.

Favourite fashion moment of 2017… It’s a toss between Next’s boho maxi dress which I wore repeatedly in spring/summer, and Boden’s pink velvet suit.

Most surreal moment of 2017… Hiking through the rainforest in Antigua in the pouring rain with giant golf umbrellas. With Josie Fear trailing behind wearing a hotel bathrobe because she was cold. It was hilarious.

My favourite restaurant of 2017… Tapas 24 in Barcelona. Monica and I had the most delicious dinner there, which I still think about on a weekly basis.

Favourite fitness class of 2017… TRX.

My wishes for 2018… Continued health, happiness, love and the ability to pay my mortgage every month!

Thank you for your continued support throughout 2017. I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing Christmas and New Year. And I look forward to returning with lots of fresh content (including a home tour!) in 2018. See you on the other side…

  1. What an incredible year it’s been for you Ella! I must say your blog is still one that I routinely visit year upon year and it’s been great listening to your podcast (I catch up with episodes at the gym and then leave feeling inspired!). And congratulations on the house too! Would love to read a post on getting a mortgage for a first-time buyer as a freelancer, if that isn’t too intrusive x

Hi Michelle, first of all thank you for the lovely comment. So pleased to hear you’ve been loving Let’s Discuss. We’re excited for our 4th season, which will likely drop in early spring. And yes, I am planning on doing lots of home content next year – both in terms of interiors and home tours and also sharing how I found the experience of getting on the property ladder and getting a mortgage. If there are any other areas you’d like me to post about just let me know, as I’d love to produce content that is actually helpful for anyone going through the same process xx

Hi Laura. SO pleased to hear you’ve been enjoying the festive episodes. The Madeleine Shaw interview was probably my favourite episode we’ve ever recorded.

And if you do visit Barcelona again next year Tapas 24 is a must xxxx

I’ve been following your blog since 2011 and absolutely love it! Congrats on another successful year and can’t wait to see what lies ahead!! xxxx

  7. I need to check out that Tapas 24 place then, living in Barcelona I really have no excuses 🙂

I’m so jealous that you’re able to go there as often as you please. If you haven’t already discovered them, Tropico and Flax & Kale are also on my list of Barcelona favourites!
