Have you done your final autumn/winter to spring/summer wardrobe switch-around yet? I made the full transition over the Easter weekend, and it instantly renewed my passion for getting dressed in the morning. I love opening up my wardrobe and seeing a riot of colour! Here are 11 items that I feel are absolutely essential to any spring and summer capsule wardrobe…
Khaki Utility Jacket: Much like Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls, I love a utility jacket! (See the evidence here, here and here). They’re perfect for daytime layering, and give pretty summer dresses a bit of an edge. Mint Velvet and Next are two of my favourite brands for khaki jackets.
Denim Jacket: Khaki utility jackets are my go-to in spring/summer, but I also enjoy a classic denim jacket. I always gravitate towards slightly cropped styles, in a true-blue or dark wash. I layer them over black jersey dresses, and also like how they look with activewear.
Leather (or Faux-Leather) Biker Jacket: British summers are unpredictable, so I always have a good leather jacket in my capsule wardrobe, for chilly and overcast days. Black sometimes feels a bit too dark and dreary for summer, so I get a lot of wear out of my onyx grey biker jacket from Hush.
White maxi dress: White maxi dresses are probably my favourite thing to wear during spring/summer. They’re totally timeless, and feel so ethereal and feminine. Plus, they couldn’t be easier to style! This season I’m loving Monsoon’s broderie design, but I’ll also be revisiting a few of my old favourites, including this Next number, this Karen Millen and this Topshop showstopper.
Cotton shirt dress: Cotton shirt dresses are also an essential for me. I love the ease of putting on just one item of clothing and having an instant outfit. Plus, they’re the best thing to wear on hot, sticky days in the city. Last summer I got SO much wear out of this gingham number from Monsoon. Gap and Uniqlo are also great stores to check out, if you’re searching for the perfect shirt dress.
Black jersey dress: I always feel sexiest when dressed in a black jersey dress. So they’re a permanent fixture in my S/S wardrobe. I typically style them with sneakers and a khaki or denim jacket. Personally, I feel like the more casual you keep the outfit, the better.
+ a jumpsuit: Jumpsuits are mildly annoying to wear all day, because you have to take the entire thing off in order to use the bathroom. But, I do believe the pros outweigh the cons! So many of my favourite looks from summer 2018 involved jumpsuits (including this design, and this dressy number). This season, I think Warehouse has the best selection of jumpsuits, on the high street.
Basic white T-shirt: Every spring/summer wardrobe needs a few good-quality, plain, white T-shirts. My current favourite is from Organic Basics. I wear them with just about everything, but really love the look of a simple white tee and denim shorts!
Printed midi skirt: Patterned midi skirts are also perfect for pairing with white tees (this is one of my favourite looks from last summer). And I also love how they look styled with button-down denim shirts and silk camisoles. Check out M&S and Hush for some great options, this season.
Cotton or linen tops: I try to avoid synthetic fabrics year-round, but won’t even consider wearing them during the summer. Monsoon always has a brilliant selection of cotton and linen tops (including the gingham off-the-shoulder style I’m wearing throughout this post). I also have my eye on their embroidered blouse!
White jeans: For years I avoided white jeans like the plague. But a few years ago I found the perfect pair at Donna Ida, and have adored the look ever since. The secret is to find a pair that are slightly off-white (Donna Ida’s are a “milk” hue), and are skinny without being skintight.
