9 Smart and Sassy Mindy Kaling Soundbites

Mindy Kaling Quotes Glamour

Do you know what today is? I’ve had the date marked in my calendar for weeks, because Mindy Kaling’s second book of essays, Why Not Me?, is finally released. As you know, Mindy is one of my favourite funny women (along with Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer), and I recommend her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, on a near-daily basis.

So, to celebrate what will now be known as “Mindy Day” I’ve put together a collection of 9 of her best smart and sassy soundbites. Read on and feel inspired…

“If you don’t see a clear path for what you want sometimes you have to make it yourself.” {source}

“Confidence is just entitlement. Entitlement has gotten a bad rap because it’s used almost exclusively for the useless children of the rich, reality TV stars, and Conrad Hilton Jr., who gets kicked off an airplane for smoking pot in the lavatory and calling people peasants or whatever. But entitlement in and of itself isn’t so bad. Entitlement is simply the belief that you deserve something. Which is great. The hard part is, you’d better make sure you deserve it.” {source}

“A lot of people ask how to get to where I am, and the single biggest thing, which is not profound, is that I work like a dog. And I work seven days a week. I have done that since forever. I can’t stress that enough. It’s a tedious thing to be successful and people, especially girls, don’t necessarily think that. They think it’s getting someone to do your hair and makeup, and showing up to events.” {source}

“My relationship with my mom is really the single most profound relationship that I’ve ever had in my life… I said to her, ‘Mom, I’m going to be so lonely without you.’ And she just said, ‘You have to be your own best friend. If you always remember that, you will always have someone there with you.’” {source}

Mindy Kaling Why Not Me Quotes

“One friend with whom you have a lot in common is better than three with whom you struggle to find things to talk about.” {source}

“I fall into that nebulous, quote-unquote, normal American woman size that legions of fashion stylists detest. For the record, I’m a size 8 – this week, anyway. Many stylists hate that size because I think to them, it shows that I lack the discipline to be an ascetic; or the confident, sassy abandon to be a total fatty hedonist.” {source}

“Insults about the way I look can’t be the thing that harms me and my heart the most. It has to harm me the least. If I have a daughter, I’m going to tell her that. Far too many women are much more hurt by being called fat or ugly than they are by being called not smart, or not a leader. If someone told me that I was stupid or that I wasn’t a leader, or that I wasn’t witty or quick or perceptive, I’d be devastated. If someone told me that I had a gross body, I’d say, ‘Well, it’s bringing me a lot of happiness.’ Like, I’m having a fine time of it. Having my priorities aligned like that has helped me have a happier life, I think.” {source}

“I love women who are bosses and who don’t constantly worry about what their employees think of them. I love women who don’t ask, “Is that OK?” after everything they say. I love when women are courageous in the face of unthinkable circumstances.” {source}

“‘Why the f*** not me?’ Should be your motto.” {source}
