How to Apply Berry Lipstick Like a Professional Makeup Artist

Berry lipsticks are an Autumn/Winter beauty staple, and over the years I’ve accumulated a beautiful collection of sumptuous plums, vibrant raspberry pinks and seductive cherry reds. The only problem is I rarely wear them, because the look seems so high maintenance. Application has to be precise, and then you need to keep a close eye on the colour throughout the day.

But this year I’m determined to make the effort and rock a berry lip more often (my favourite pinky nude bullets could use a break anyway…) And to get motivated I spoke to Clinique’s UK Colour Artist, Florrie White, who kindly shared her expert tips. Here’s what she had to say…

CTP: What’s the best way to find a berry lipstick that flatters your skin tone? Are there rules to follow?

Florrie White: There are rules based around skin tones, but the surest way of finding a complimentary shade is by trying and testing. Take advantage of your local make-up counter and have a play. I always think it’s best to follow your instinct, so try out a colour before you buy and see the reaction from your friends before you commit.

How do we get long-lasting, precise results when applying deep, juicy lip colours?

Make sure to even out your lip shape first by using a lip liner, and then fill in the whole of the lips with the liner pencil. This will hold onto the lipstick, giving a long-lasting finish. Also, choose a lipstick with a creamy formulation – it will glide on and be easier to apply.

Which Clinique products do you turn to when creating a berry lip?

It’s so important to prep the lips before you start, and I love All About Lips for this because it leaves a matte finish. Then go in and perfect the lip shape with Clinique’s new Quickliner Intense pencil and apply a creamy, intense finish with a Clinique Pop lipstick.

Which style of eye makeup best compliments berry lipstick?

You can either keep the eye simple with a few coats of black mascara, making the lips a real statement, or create a really classic smokey eye with a complimentary pigment such as Clinique Black Honey All About Eyes eyeshadow. Then balance the cheeks with a light berry flush on the apples of the cheeks.
