“I often say that dreaming should be part of everyone’s daily practise,” Kristina Karlsson, fonder of kikki.K and author of Your Dream Life Starts Here, told me when we sat down together in London, last week. “In the same way that you go to the gym, do yoga or practise meditation, dreaming should be part of your daily routine.”
Kristina was in town to promote her new book, which provides “essential and simple steps to creating the life of your dreams.” And it was so lovely to catch-up and hear about her new podcast and the story behind the book.
As you’ve probably guessed from the title, Kristina is so passionate about the power of dreaming and said, “I want to remind people: even if you get to live a long life, life is short. And sometimes we forget that we can do whatever we want.”
So, if you’ve ever wondered how to make your dreams a reality, read on to discover Kristina’s simple strategies…
DEFINE YOUR DREAMS
“When we set goals we often look at where we are in the moment and think, ‘What can I do in twelve months’ time?’ And you end up restricting yourself, based on your current circumstances.” Kristina said.
“But, if you remove your current circumstances from the equation and instead say, ‘If I had all of the money and time that I need, along with all of the resources and knowledge, what would I do?’ And that question takes you into a deeper level of dreaming.”
“Even if you get to live a long life, life is short. And sometimes we forget that we can do whatever we want.”
Your Dream Life Starts Here includes lots of exercises to help you unlock and define your dreams. And one of Kristina’s favourite activities is called Life Is Short.
“Life Is Short is a really powerful exercise that I use all the time. But it’s not for everyone. Some people find it too confronting,” Kristina explained.
“We all know that we’re going to die one day; we just don’t know when it’s going to be. And I think it’s so powerful to ask: What decisions would you make today, and what dreams would you pursue, if you knew you only had three years left to live?”
BELIVE THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
I asked Kristina if she thought any dream was too big, and her response was pretty amazing. “I really, truly believe that nothing is impossible. You can’t do everything, but you can do anything,” she said.
Kristina’s book features incredible stories from women who went against all odds and achieved their dreams, from scholar and humanitarian, Dr Tererai Trent, to Olympic gold medalist, Alisa Camplin-Warner. So it proves there should be no limits to your dreams.
But Kristina is keen to emphasise that although anything is possible, bigger doesn’t always mean better when it comes to dreaming. “A dream doesn’t have to be big. The small things can make such a huge difference too,” she said.
“I really, truly believe that nothing is impossible. You can’t do everything, but you can do anything.”
MAKE YOUR DREAMS A REALITY
Your Dream Life Starts Here provides all of the tools you need to achieve your dreams. I’ve begun working my way through the exercises in the book, and it’s instantly made me take a more proactive approach to my goals.
Just before I said goodbye to Kristina, I asked her how she makes her dreams a reality. And she was happy to share her strategy…
“I think it works well to set three dreams per year,” Kristina revealed. “And once you’ve set your three dreams, write down whatever comes to mind about how you can achieve them. For example: one of my dreams is to sell a million copies of my book. Because $1 from the sale of each book will be donated to the Tererai Trent International Foundation and will help support Tererai’s dream to provide universal access to quality education for children, regardless of their gender or socio-economic backgrounds. And I want to be able to give her $1 million.”
“I’ve made a list of all of the things that could help me achieve that dream. I’d love to be on Oprah’s book club list, because I know that will make a difference to sales. And I want the book to be on Amazon, because then it will reach more people,” Kristina continued.
“So you write a list of everything that could help you achieve your dream, and then you choose the seven things that will make the biggest difference and work on them. I break these seven points down into Smart Goals, by working on them every day and putting time frames to them. It’s very methodical. And that’s how I make my dreams happen.”
