When I removed my coat for these photos my friend (and longtime photographer) Victoria asked whether the plaid shirt and cropped knit was one piece. It kind of looks that way, doesn’t it? But they’re two separates, and it’s my latest easy winter layering trick.
I ordered the cropped knit sweater from Topshop specifically to wear with high-waisted skirts, because tucking longline knits into my waistbands was starting to get annoying (and I suspect it was also making me look 4-5 months pregnant). But once the khaki knit arrived I realised it would also allow me to get more wear out of my plaid shirts.
Plaid shirts are one of my winter staples, because they’re so warm. But I do sometimes find them a little bit too masculine for my style. Having a sliver of plaid peeking out beneath a cable knit sweater definitely feels more polished. And it’s fast become one of my favourite casual winter outfits.
I’m Wearing: Cropped knit by Topshop | Plaid shirt by ASOS | Jeans by J Brand | Coat by Next (past season – similar here) | Scarf by Lois Avery (gift) | Bag by Aspinal of London (gift) | Boots by Burberry (past season – similar here) | Necklace by Monica Vinader
I received a few questions about this Next military coat when I shared this photo on Instagram, last week. The coat was from their AW16 collection, but I’ve found a very similar style at Monsoon (which is now on sale). So if you were after the coat this is a great alternative.
My collection of coats has got out of hand this winter, so I really need to do an emergency KonMari session. But there’s absolutely no way I’ll part with this military coat. It’s so cosy, and perfect for the coldest winter days…
Does this easy winter layering outfit idea get the thumbs up from you?
