When it comes to fragrance I’m a bit of a commitment-phobe. I would love to be the kind of woman who has a signature scent, because it seems so classy and grown up. But I’m too easily distracted by new releases and constantly find myself adding to my perfume collection.
My one saving grace is the fact I do have a clear fragrance identity, even if I’m lacking in the signature scent department. I’ve always favoured warm, fruity and crisp blends, and gravitate towards perfumes that contain bergamot and/or amber. Here’s a look back at my fragrance history and a run-down of my current favourites…
A Brief History of my Life in Fragrance…
Early Fragrance Favourites:
Cacharel Amor Amor
I started wearing Amor Amor when I was 13, and it was the first fragrance I owned. All of my friends wore the eau de toilette, which had just been released, so it was a classic case of following the crowd. I wouldn’t be able to recognise the scent, but the bottle still brings back fond memories.
Stella McCartney STELLA
In my mid to late teens I flitted between a number of fragrances. Ghost (which I can recognise from a mile away), Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue and Burberry Brit. Eventually I settled down with STELLA by Stella McCartney, which I wore throughout college and still love to this day.
My Current Daytime Favourites:
Jo Malone London Nasturtium & Clover
Jo Malone London’s Nasturtium & Clover was my signature scent throughout summer 2016. It’s so fresh, crisp and summery. As part of the limited edition Herb Garden collection it’s no longer available, but I’m hoping they’ll add it to the permanent collection next year.
CHANEL Chance Eau Tendre
I’m not usually one for sweet and girlish scents, but Chance Eau Tendre is one of my daytime favourites. Although it’s a sugary, fruity-floral blend, it remains delicate and isn’t at all overpowering. I wear it year-round, but think it really comes into its own over the summer.
My Current After Dark Favourites:
Tom Ford Black Orchid
There’s no denying it, Tom Ford Black Orchid is an insanely sexy scent! With notes of black truffle, sandalwood, amber, blackcurrant and bergamot it’s warm and sultry, making it the perfect date-night perfume. Spritz it on and you immediately feel sassy.
Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly
Dear Polly by Vilhelm Parfumerie is another date-night favourite, but I generally save it for Autumn/Winter. It’s warming, and a little smokey, with notes of black tea, bergamot, apple and black amber. It was created by perfumer Jan Ahlgren for his wife Polly.
My New Season Favourites:
Malin + Goetz Vetiver
Malin + Goetz are celebrating autumn’s arrival with a new fragrance. The Vetiver EDP joins the already-popular Vetiver candle, and is a great day-to-night option for AW16. It feels like you’re wearing a warm, cosy hug when you spritz it on. I’m completely obsessed!
Jo Malone London Basil & Neroli
I’ve also fallen hard for Jo Malone London’s latest fragrance launch (no surprise there – I love everything they do). The Basil & Neroli cologne is absolutely dreamy. It’s very similar to Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino, but the addition of basil gives it a fresh kick. Expect it to become a bestseller!
