When it came to furnishing my apartment I was very careful to make sure it didn’t end up looking like an IKEA showroom. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love IKEA. And I was definitely shopping on a budget. But I wanted my home to reflect my personality and style – not look like a spread from the IKEA catalogue – so I tried to be smart about the pieces I purchased.
I think I’ve done a pretty good job. And all of my IKEA buys look completely at home in my apartment.
If you’re curious to know exactly what I purchased, read on to see 3 of the best IKEA products that I bought for my first apartment…
The Best IKEA Products for a Small Apartment
The IKEA PS Cabinet
The IKEA PS metal cabinet was one of the first pieces of furniture I purchased for my apartment. I’d previously seen a home featured in LivingEtc magazine where a similar cabinet had been placed behind a sofa, and I thought it was such a clever use of space.
My “home office” is situated at the far end of my living room, so the PS cabinet acts as a division between the two areas. Work on one side, downtime on the other.
I treat the top of the PS cabinet like a coffee table, and style it with books, magazines, flowers, candles and a gold tray from West Elm. The inside is far less photogenic. It houses all of my ugly work equipment, such as cameras, chargers, tripods etc. Basically, anything that I don’t want on show gets shoved inside the cabinet.
Although it’s quite a masculine and industrial looking piece of furniture, it’s very easy to transform with accessories, because the white design essentially makes it a blank canvas.
My apartment is fairly small, and I’ve tried really hard not to crowd the square-footage with furniture. So I don’t have many bookshelves or chests of drawers.
But instead I purchased a couple of floating shelves from IKEA. They’re so cheap, and there are plenty of customisation options available with all of the different shelving brackets etc.
I created a small vanity area in the corner of my bedroom using one of the EKBY VALTER/EKBY JÄRPEN wall shelves [pictured]. I also have two of the LACK shelves above my TV. And I use the MOSSLANDA picture shelves to display artwork.
All blend seamlessly into the apartment, and once styled don’t scream “I’m from IKEA” (which no one wants).
The KALLAX Shelving Unit
The KALLAX shelving unit was one of the only pieces of furniture I moved into my apartment with. It had been great for organisation whilst I was living at my parents house, but once I moved it into my living room it quickly became a dumping ground and I didn’t find the square shelves particularly useful.
I almost got rid of it, but then noticed all of the KALLAX inserts online, which help you customise the shelving unit to your needs. I added two rows of drawers, which instantly made the KALLAX more practical. And I also purchased two rattan baskets, so I could keep all of my mess hidden away.
It was so much cheaper than buying an entirely new piece of furniture. And now it actually suits my needs. The only thing left to do is change the handles on the drawers, because the silver hardware that came with the IKEA inserts don’t match the rest of my decor. I’m thinking of going for these Zara Home handles instead.
