The Year’s Best Dressed Celebrities (Part One)

2014 Best Dressed List

There are few things in life I enjoy more than discussing red carpet fashion. So naturally Awards Season feels like a national holiday for me. The hoopla kicks off again on January 11th, with the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, and to warm up my fashion-critiquing muscles I thought I’d compile a list of 2014’s Best Dressed celebrities. Obviously this is mostly a matter of personal taste, but I’ve thought long and hard about my choices, and hope you agree they’re all deserving of a place on the list.

Best Newcomer: Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong'o Oscar

Steal Lupita’s Style:

This was Lupita Nyong’o’s year. On January 1st she was a relatively unknown Yale graduate starring in her first feature film, and she’s now the woman every designer wants to dress. The ‘Nairobi blue’ Prada gown she wore to collect her Oscar is her strongest look to date, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she finds a way to top it in 2015!

Most Underrated: Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley Valentino

Steal Keira’s Style:

Although Keira Knightley has starred in four new releases this year and walked countless red carpets she’s remained largely under the radar. Good taste doesn’t guarantee newspaper headlines, it seems. Switching between Valentino [above], Chanel, Erdem and Michael van der Ham, the 29-year-old has been looking better than ever and it’s about time we all sat up and took notice!

Best Transformation: Taylor Swift (joint winner)

Taylor Swift Antonio Berardi

Steal Taylor’s Style:

Taylor Swift chopped her long locks into a Karlie Kloss-style bob this spring, and it’s done wonders for her style. The predictable pastel-pink gowns still make a rare appearance here and there, but the 25-year-old has started experimenting with co-ords, cut-outs and statement prints. In fact, over the summer it felt like she was staging a one-woman fashion show on the streets of New York. Every day she treated us to a different (pap-friendly) look.

Best Transformation: Emma Watson (joint winner)

Emma Watson Golden Globes Dior

Steal Emma’s Style:

Emma Watson’s style has also matured this year; despite the fact she only made a select few red carpet appearances. The pièce de résistance was, of course, the backless Christian Dior haute couture dress, which Emma wore to the Golden Globes on top of tailored trousers. It was daring, on point and totally unforgettable!

Best Dressed Plus One: Camila Alves

Camila Alves Georges Hobeika

Steal Camila’s Style:

Camila Alves has walked every notable red carpet with her husband, Matthew McConaughey, and she was busier than ever during 2014’s “McConaissance”. She always makes an impression without detracting attention from Matthew, and isn’t afraid to take risks with her style. In my opinion, Camila’s strongest look this year was the Georges Hobeika suit and matching cape, which she wore to the Interstellar premiere in London [pictured above].

The second half of my 2014 Best Dressed List will be posted around New Year’s Eve, so check back after Christmas to see which other stars made the edit. Do you approve of my choices so far?

  1. The Very Simon G says:

Agree about Camila, always sooo gorgeous! Where’s Gwen Stefani or Rupaul or Dolly on this list??? 🙂

  2. Love the list so far. I have to admit, I have been deeply envious of Emma Watson’s wardrobe choices all year, she has looked incredible every time. Sleek, cool and elegant every time (I have a little bit of a girl crush on her, I have to be honest… )

    Chambray & Curls

  3. Abigail Smith says:

Oops, just “accidentally” bought that gorgeous Topshop funnel neck. In my defence, I have a definite thing for green recently.
Loved Keira’s Valentino dress as soon as I saw it and I still covet it now, stunning!
Good lis, can’t wait to see part two…

  4. Completely agree with best newcomer! LOVE Lupita! I personally can’t stand Taylor Swift but sure, I’ve got to admit her style has improved loads.
