The Weekend Reading List

Weekend Reading List Coco's Tea Party

Anyone who listens to the Let’s Discuss podcast will know that I’m a HUGE fan of Brené Brown, an author, researcher and professor at the University of Houston. Brené’s book Rising Strong completely changed my life, and she’s currently busy promoting her latest book, Braving the Wilderness: The quest for true belonging and the courage to stand alone.

As excerpt from Braving the Wilderness was published in this week’s Lenny Letter, and it’s essential reading. Brené talks about the dangers of bulls**t, and how we must collectively learn how to speak truth to BS. You can find the link below, but here’s a little teaser to whet your appetite…

“One of the biggest drivers of bulls**t today is the proliferation of the belief that “You’re either with us or you’re against us.” It’s an emotional line that we hear everyone, from politicians to movie heroes and villains, invoke on a regular basis. Well-intentioned or not, 95 percent of the time, it’s an emotional and passionate rendering of bulls**t.”

  • I get into trouble for speaking honestly and straightforwardly ALL THE TIME. People are so used to being lied to or at least being coated into feeling certain things, they can no longer stand anyone expressing their actual opinion.

That’s very true actually. It goes back to that whole theory about the social media echo chambers, and how we now just surround ourselves with people who have the same opinions as us / don’t want to hear anything that contradicts what we think.
