Are Our Relationships Written in the Stars? An Astrologer Explains Zodiac Compatibility

Star Sign Compatibility Susan Miller

Are you into astrology? I’ve always found it fascinating, and was thrilled to discover Birchbox UK have teamed up with celebrity astrologer, Susan Miller, to bring subscribers a special astrology box for the month of October. Ahead of the launch, I was lucky enough to speak to Susan about astrological compatibility – a subject that seems to captivate even the most cynical among us – and she was kind enough to explain exactly how it’s measured. So if you’ve been wondering whether you and your beau are the perfect match read on to discover more…

“Astrology is richly textured, and it requires years of study to understand the poetry of the human heart,” Susan Miller explains.

“We are born with eight natal planets in our charts, plus the sun and moon. So, in relationships, it’s almost certain that something in both of your charts will be responsible for drawing you to one another. Astrology is not destiny, so while the two of you might not be a classic match in astrological terms, you can still find a way to get along quite beautifully by understanding each other’s needs.”

“I believe everyone can get along. It may vary in terms of ease, and in some instances the relationship may take a little more effort than others. But, the point is, you can get along.”

“A simple rule of thumb is that matching elements get along well. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) get along beautifully with other fire people. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) with water. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) with Air. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) with Earth. Yet earth will blend well with water, and vice versa, and fire will blend nicely with air and vice versa.”

“You may be astrologically perfect for one another, but in the end, not get along. We are currently seeing this played out on the world stage with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Here we have fire sign Brad Pitt (Sagittarius) paired with air sign Angelina Jolie (Gemini). And prior to that marriage, Brad’s previous mate was another air sign Jennifer Aniston (Aquarius).”

“Air signs make fire signs like Brad’s Sagittarius Sun burn more brightly. The breakup of Brad and Angelina is a shame, as Brad had two chances at happiness with two different women, both astrologically perfect for him. But, as we see here, there are no guarantees that a relationship will continue to work long term. The final outcome is always driven by how badly each person wants to keep the relationship growing and strong.”

“Astrology is not destiny, so while the two of you might not be a classic match in astrological terms, you can still find a way to get along quite beautifully.”

“Have a look at what the ancients told us about each sign. You should find out your own rising sign and that of your partner. The rising sign is so important to know, for that sign is equal in importance to the sun sign. If you just read the information for your sun sign you are only getting 50% of the information.” (Editor’s note: Your rising sign is the sign that was ascending over the Eastern horizon at the time of your birth, and is independent of your star/sun sign. For instance, I’m an Aries and my rising sign is Virgo.)

“You need to have knowledge of your entire natal chart before making decisions. You might discover that you’re not classically compatible by your sun signs, but your rising sign or other planets in your chart might blend flawlessly. When assessing ease of relating to one another, look at your entire charts. You cannot make assumptions based on just one planet. Astrology is much more subtle, intricate and delicate than that.”

“I say, if you are dating someone, give that person a chance. Date, have fun, enjoy one another. You won’t be able to know if you are going to marry someone in the first three dates!”

“Your moon sign reflects where you feel safe. If you are with someone who has the moon in the same sign as yours, you always feel safe with that person.”

“The moon also reflects your domestic situation. Prince William is a Cancer (water) and Kate Middleton is a Capricorn (earth), and we know earth and water blend beautifully. Kate has her moon in Cancer, the same sign as her husband, which is a fine indication of success in a relationship. She feels safe and happy, and just as importantly, deeply understood by the Prince.”

“Look at the compatibility guide on my website, Let’s say you are a Gemini… Look at I am a Gemini and my lover is a Libra. Then do the opposite, I am a Libra and my lover is a Gemini. I give you two completely different reports. Then do the same with your rising signs. My website is free, and you can print out the results.”

“If you want to discover your rising and moon sign visit, where I can write a custom 65-page astrological chart for you. Just have your precise time of birth handy! You only need to do your chart once, as the natal chart never changes. And once you know your rising sign (also called ascendant) you will get so much more from astrology.”
