My Most Used Summer Beauty Products

Summer Beauty 2018 Edit

I’ve been planning to write about summer beauty for a number of weeks now. But, really, my look so far this season has been best defined as “Sweaty Mess”.

London is hot, hot, hot. And I’m absolutely loving it. However, it’s meant that what little makeup I do apply has usually melted off my face by lunchtime. My T-zone has been SO shiny, lately, that it takes the phrase “dewey complexion” to a whole new level.

To offset these surprising temperatures I’ve adapted my daily beauty look, swapping foundation for tinted moisturiser and ditching eyeliner altogether (too much smudging). And here are some of the products I’ve been using on repeat…

My Summer Beauty Edit

Skin: Olay Total Effects SPF30 is one of my favourite daytime moisturisers, as it protects against pollution and sun exposure. So I usually apply that if I’m going to be out and about. But if I’m spending the day in front of my laptop, I switch to Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Defense, which helps to protect skin from the damaging effects of blue light.

The latter is a new addition to my beauty bag, and I really like the texture. It’s lovely and hydrating, but feels more like a primer than a moisturiser once it settles on the skin, in my opinion. It’s a great base for makeup.

Complexion: After moisturiser I then apply Ultrasun SPF50 Face Fluid if it’s a really bright day. And then it’s time for tinted moisturiser. Chanel Les Beiges Sheer Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturiser is my current go-to. I wear the shade “light”, or switch to “medium light” if I’ve applied fake tan. It makes the skin look really luminous and healthy.

If I still have a bit of redness around my mouth or nose, after applying tinted moisturiser, I use Bare Minerals BarePro 16-Hour Full Coverage Concealer, which instantly evens out my skintone. It’s fast become my favourite concealer for redness and blemishes!

Eyes: As I mentioned, I’ve stopped using kohl and liquid eyeliner because it’s been smudging too much in the heat. So instead I’ve been using neutral eyeshadow palettes to create soft, smokey eyes in golden tones – lining my lash line with a chocolate brown shadow for depth.

The Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude eyeshadow palette has quickly become my favourite for this look, as the rose gold tones are really flattering and work for day and night.

And I’ve also fallen back in love with Lancôme Hypnôse mascara, which creates the perfect long, curled, dramatic lashes. I don’t know why I ever stopped using it, but it’s safe to say I won’t make that mistake again!

Jo Loves Orange Butterflies

Tan: I’ve written about my favourite self-tanning products and brands many times, over the years. So I won’t bore you with a repeat of that information. However, this summer I’ve mostly been alternating between Tan-Luxe Wonder Oil and Vita Liberata Invisi Foaming Tan Water.

Wonder Oil produces my favourite colour, but is a bit of a faff to apply all over the body. So I generally just use it on my legs. The Invisi Foaming Water is much easier (and quicker) to apply for a head-to-toe tan, and it also produces a natural look. Neither have a guide colour, however, so they’re best suited to those who are confident when it comes to applying fake tan.

Fragrance: I’ve been wearing Jo Loves Orange Butterflies perfume all summer, and think it’s the perfect scent for the season. The citrus and floral blend contains notes of orange blossom, petitgrain, mandarin and neroli, and it was inspired by the South of France. A few spritzes instantly make me feel like I’m on holiday. It’s so uplifting!
