Trend Driven: Snakeskin Takes Centre Stage For Spring 2013

For some unknown reason I always think of Shania Twain when snakeskin is mentioned. As far as I can remember she never had a crazy head-to-toe snake moment to rival Britney and Justin’s denim extravaganza, but I always feel like she would have done… or should have done! There’s still time for Shania, however, as the Spring/Summer 2013 collections paid homage to the year of the snake. Designers experimented with snakeskin and snake print leather, mixing it together with acidic brights, delicate lace and feminine shapes. It was unexpected, but looks surprisingly cool…

Snakeskin Spring Summer 2013

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez used snakeskin to great effect at Proenza Schouler. The S/S 2013 show played with collage techniques, pairing patches of lime snake with yellow leather and fusing neutral python prints with a glossy, flame red. In London Erdem Moralioglu was concocting his own eye-catching combination. He added a lace overlay to snakeskin, and sliced it together with elegant pastel shades. It’s easily one of the standout collections from the season.

If you’re a fan of the snakeskin look search for colourful pieces that can be worn with a variety of different items. I like Equipment’s bright blue cashmere sweater and Topshop’s snake-wrap lace dress. Both items will score major fashion points!

I was just wondering if anyone knows if designers are using real or fake skin? If they are real are they coming from sustainable sources??
