The 2014 Academy Awards Best Dressed

Oscars 2014 Red Carpet Best Dressed

The Academy Awards red carpet is not the place you go to make a big fashion statement. The most memorable and daring dresses always come out at the Golden Globes or the Vanity Fair after party; but year after year I foolishly ignore this fact and go in with unrealistic expectations. The Oscars 2014 red carpet failed to produce any major fashion moments – as expected – but there were some really beautiful, timeless gowns on display. And after a morning of deliberation I’ve finally settled on my Best Dressed list. The winners are…

Lupita Nyongo Prada Oscars 2014

Lupita Nyong’o in Prada: It’s hard to keep the fashion mojo flowing throughout Awards Season, and this year Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams have given the most consistent red carpet performances. However, Amy kept her look low-key last night, making Lupita is the reigning style champion for Awards Season 2014. To collect her Best Supporting Actress Oscar she wore a pleated, pastel blue dress by Prada and accessorised with a delicate headband. I love everything about this look, and was pleased to see Lupita opt for something super-feminine for her big night. She is a total dream!

Amy Adams Gucci Premiere Oscars 2014

Amy Adams in Gucci Premiere: I’ll be honest, I wasn’t crazy about Amy’s Gucci Premiere gown when she hit the red carpet, even tweeting it was “underwhelming”. I stand by that description somewhat – because after a flawless run of looks I was expecting something a bit more… dazzling. But on reflection, Amy was definitely one of the best dressed actresses, last night. The sapphire blue dress flattered her slender figure, whilst the tuxedo-inspired neckline added some interest to the simple shape. And her Tiffany & Co ruby earrings were a wonderful choice, as they brought a welcome burst of colour to the table (Sandra Bullock wore a similar shade of blue, but failed to lift the look with any extra colour).

Cate Balnchett Armani Prive Oscars 2014

Cate Balnchett in Armani Prive: It’s no surprise that Cate Blanchett won the award for Best Actress. It’s also no surprise that she wore Armani. But I was a little shocked to discover the embellished gown wasn’t a custom design, and was actually part of Armani Prive’s fall 2013 collection. Hardly anyone wears “off the rack” (if you can call couture “off the rack”) to the Oscars anymore, but Cate isn’t one to play by the rules. The romantic, embellished dress was a real treat, and it’s not often that we see Cate in overly-feminine styles. Angelina Jolie, Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Jessica Biel also wore variations on this “soft gold” (aka nude) look, but none of them looked quite as beautiful as Cate…

And that, ladies and gentleman, is a wrap on Awards Season 2014! As always please leave or tweet me at @cocosteaparty to let me know who topped your Best Dressed list at last night’s Academy Awards…

  • I absolutely loved lupita’s look, the pale blue really suited her xx

  • Estranged

I don’t understand the hype around Lupita’s dress. She’s had more memorable moments this year, I’m quite disappointed. I think that the deep v-neck is unflattering on her, because of Lupita’s quite athletic, toned body. And the headband is just too twee.

I loved Emma Watson’s look! Followed by Cate Blanchett, that woman can do no wrong.

    • cocos_tea_party

I loved the top half of Emma’s look and the hair and makeup, but wasn’t into the skirt. Otherwise she would have been in my top 3 for sure!

  • pinkschmink

You’re so right about the Oscars red carpet not being the place for making huge statements, but I always go into it expecting something amazing too! That’s why I did a little post to recognise all the unsung heroes of the night. Y’know, like Jared Leto’s hair. 😉

  • Melina Kolyvakis

I think the Oscars are serious are elegant, so stars keep it beautiful instead of shocking. But it is always fun and exciting to see who wears who.

And it is no surprise Lupita is in every best dressed list, she has had an impecable awards season! I loved every dressed she wore. And light blue is clearly a great colour for her.
I did love also Cate’s and Amy’s dresses.
