Must Read: ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?’ by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me

Over the weekend I was having brunch with a friend and the subject of celebrities and TV inevitably came up. I quickly leapt into a passionate outpouring of love for Mindy Kaling, who I’ve been obsessed with ever since I started watching The Mindy Project a few months ago, and my friend asked whether I’d read her book. “Mindy has a book?! How did I not know this?! What’s it called?! Where can I get it?!” was my (over-the-top) immediate reaction.

A trip to Waterstones quickly followed, because I’m impatient and couldn’t possibly have waited for an Amazon delivery (literary emergencies like these make me thankful physical book shops still exist), and I read Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? from cover-to-cover within 24 hours. So basically what I’m trying to say is this book is awesome and you need it in your life! It’s perfect summer holiday reading – that’s a promise.

Topics covered in Mindy’s short, humorous essays include Sex and the City-induced anxiety (“Am I supposed to be able to afford Manolo Blahnik shoes? What is Barneys New York?”), being “chubby for life”, and boys. If you already have a girl crush on Mindy you’ll definitely love this book. But if you haven’t been watching her show, and don’t understand what all the fuss is about, this scene illustrating the horror of your boyfriend fitting into your jeans should explain everything…
