In Search of the Perfect Summer Clutch Bag

Michael Kors Stanwyck Tan Clutch Spring 2014

Confession time: I have an overflowing collection of clutch bags and I never use any of them. Ever. They’re all awkwardly squashed together in a drawer, hoping to escape for an hour or two and get some daylight. Why aren’t you using us? They shout. We’re in fashion this season, don’t you know?

So the last thing I need is yet another leather pouch. However, over the weekend I stumbled across the above image from Michael Kors’ Spring/Summer 2014 collection and now I’m obsessed with his Stanwyck Python Frame Clutch. OBSESSED. It’s seriously chic, especially paired with the pinstripe blouse and matching tan belt.

Luckily – or unluckily, however you see it – the Stanwyck retails at $1,295, so it won’t be joining the Clutch Bag Drawer of Doom anytime soon*. But it prompted me to look online for more affordable options, and the best I could come up with is this vintage-effect pouch from ASOS and ASOS USA. It’s £35/$66.

The shape, finish and shade are all off, I know, but its spirit feels similar. (Yes, clutch bags totally have spirit). Both kind of look like they could have been owned by your grandma and have been passed on as a family heirloom. And the ASOS number, much like the Michael Kors Stanwyck, would look damn good with a blue shirt!

*I’m also not sure how I feel about carrying python either…

  • I’m the same way with clutches. I can’t resist them because they’re so cute, but I don’t use them very often. However, this one looks relaxed enough for daytime.
