There’s been lots of talk about The Intern movie on Coco’s Tea Party over the last few weeks, and if you’ve already seen the film you will know exactly what I’m talking about when I say it’s loaded with style inspiration. Anne Hathaway’s wardrobe is total perfection (think clean lines, mannish tailoring and daring bursts of colour), and I also found myself coveting everything her on-screen assistant wears.
So who do we have to thank for this incredible feat in styling? Costume designer Jacqueline Oknaian. Jacqueline cut her teeth assisting on Ugly Betty, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Sex and the City 2 and The Other Woman, so it’s no surprise that The Intern is loaded with high fashion!
I caught up with Jacqueline over email to talk about her thought process behind the costumes; so here’s an inside look into what it takes to style a movie…
The look for Jules, played by Anne Hathaway:
“Jules is a modern working woman who is running a fashion startup company, and also happens to be a mom. Her wardrobe is very chic but also practical. She has great pieces in her closet that fulfil both sides of her life – being the CEO of a company, and coming home to her family.”
“Jules’ look was a modern version of Katherine Hepburn – I incorporated classic menswear inspired jackets and trousers into her look. She has strong pieces in her wardrobe, but she wears them with ease. She is the ultimate girlboss!”
Which brands did you dress Jules in?
“Jules’ designers included Celine, Saint Laurent, Valentino, Martin Grant, Dior, Chanel, Victoria Beckham, Dries Van Noten, Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, Jennifer Fisher and Monica Vinader. She is always so put together in the way she dresses.”
The look for Becky, played by Christina Scherer:
“Becky’s wardrobe needed to reflect her personality and position at work. She plays Jules’ assistant and is always trying to keep up with her busy schedule. Becky is young and is working at a fashion company that is based in Brooklyn, so her look is hip and fun. However, she always has a bit of dishevelment going on because she is always overwhelmed.”
Which brands did you dress Becky in?
“Becky’s designers included Maison Kitsune, Steven Alan, Altuzzura, Miu Miu, The Kooples, Topshop, and Current Elliott. Becky’s closet is trendier and not as high end as Jules’. She wears quirkier designers. Her clothes reflect her personality in the way that she is able to just throw her pieces on as quickly as possible and run out the door. However, the ensembles always work and she looks adorable.”
Did you have any favourite outfits or items of clothing whilst shooting the movie?
“My favourite outfits on The Intern were Jules’ Victoria Beckham mod sixties style dress, her Martin Grant trench coat look with the Alaia black knit top and a Barney’s New York leather skirt. I honestly have to say I loved every one of Jules’ looks!”
“I also liked Becky’s Miu Miu floral dress. And all of the boys in the office had their own distinct style that reflected their personality. They were all so much fun to dress!”
Did you go to see The Intern over the weekend? And, if so, were you also obsessed with the fashion? Leave a comment and let me know…
