The sheer randomness of fashion trends can sometimes be deeply bemusing. Case point: the ruffle knit. They’ve somehow become a style must-have, and can be found in almost all of the Autumn/Winter 2016 high street collections. Obviously I love them, because I’ve always drawn to fashion’s silly side. And it’s not everyday knitwear makes you resemble an octopus.
Nailing this trend is pretty easy – just keep the rest of your outfit simple. So opt for skinny jeans, a leather skirt or dark, tailored trousers. And it’s important to chose your ruffles wisely. If you’re above a B-cup I would suggest avoiding anything with ruffles across the chest, and stick to knits with sleeve or hip detailing. But if you’re flat-chested, like me, cleverly-positioned ruffles could help create the illusion of curves. So try this Miss Selfridge style.
I paired my mustard ruffle knit with a classic pea coat from Jigsaw, my faithful J Brand “Maria” jeans and Seven Boot Lane’s cuban heels. It’s an easy outfit, that will take me from breakfast meeting right through to dinner and drinks with friends. And I love how unexpected mustard yellow is – it’s a seriously underused winter hue, and is surprisingly versitle!
