As far as Instagram is concerned it often feels like I’m living a double life. To friends, family and acquaintances outside the fashion industry my 17K+ following seems like a lot. A LOT a lot. But within the blogosphere that number is tiny – a grain of sand compared to the 4.8 million that someone like Chiara Ferragni boasts. And, honestly, I’m okay with that.
However, there’s always room to grow, and after much trial and error I’ve settled upon 3 simple ways to steadily increase those numbers. So, if you’re currently wondering how to get more Instagram followers read on for my top tips…
1. Be consistent
Look at popular Instagrammers like Julie Sariñana, Shini Park and Julia Engel and you’ll notice they all post frequently – at least 2-3 times a day without fail. This constant turnover of images is exhausting, but vital if you wish to increase your numbers. And, as well as sticking to a strict posting routine, it’s also important to commit to an editing style. So select one filter and use this on all of your images to give your feed a clean, consistent look.
2. Use popular hashtags
So, now what? You’re posting great pictures daily, but how do you get new people to discover your account? One of the best ways is to use popular hashtags on your images, where appropriate. Avoid going overboard with spammy text like #follow4follow and instead use up to 5 carefully chosen tags to help make your images more discoverable.
Currently the most popular hashtags on Instagram are #love #instagood #tbt #photooftheday #cute #me #beautiful and #happy. They change often, however, so it’s worth logging into Iconosquare analytics regularly to monitor the top 100 tags (their optimization tool also shares the best hours to post images).
3. Work for regrams
Once you begin to implement these changes you should start to see a steady flow of new followers arriving. But to get a dramatic jump in numbers you’re going to need to work for some regrams. Scoring a regram from a popular Instagram account (100k+ followers) can reward you with anywhere between 50-1,000 new followers in a matter of hours. So make sure you tag any brands, restaurants, hotels or boutiques featured in your images with their respective Instagram handles. The easier it is for them to see your beautiful pictures the more likely they are to share them with their followers.
