Anna Sui Fall 2013 Fuses Gossip Girl Flair With Sixties Style

Over-the-knee socks, twinsets, sweater vests, boucle coats and wool berets… you wouldn’t expect to lust after any of the following items in May, but seeing as summer doesn’t appear to be arriving any time soon I’ve turned my attention to the Autumn/Winter 2013 collections. And one show, in particular, is standing out above the rest. The Anna Sui Fall 2013 collection is vibrant, fun and full of interesting styling ideas.

Anna Sui Fall 2013

Anna Sui’s inspiration for Autumn/Winter 2013 came from the sixties, but the runway styling also reminded me of Blair Waldorf and her loyal ‘minions’. Had Blair been a little less Park Avenue and slightly more bohemian these looks could easily have come from Gossip Girl season one. Can’t you just picture her wearing the raspberry pink coat with matching beret? It has Constance Billard School for Girls written all over it! If I had the time and patience I’d totally photoshop her face into the Anna Sui collection.

Start collecting over-the-knee socks in an array of eye-popping patterns, and keep your eyes peeled for printed twinsets and zany handbags. By September I’m sure the high street will be full of copycat designs, but if you able to put the Anna Sui Fall 2013 look together now you should definitely go for it! It’s always nice to be first in on a trend…

J.Crew Hosts the Ultimate Low-Key Summer Wedding

I don’t pay much attention to bridal trends, as I’ve never been one of those girls that dreams of a big wedding (although Bride Wars, ironically, is one of my favourite movies). But over the last few months it’s become clear that big, Disney Princess weddings have been ditched in favour of something more relaxed and low-key.

How do I know? Well, Pinterest is bursting with creative wedding tips (seriously, I think I could now plan a bridal shower in my sleep), Keira Knightley just got married in a recycled Rodarte dress, and this week Grazia is celebrating the “rise of the bridechillas” (they love to merge words at Grazia). Oh – and most importantly – J.Crew’s Wedding Collection for summer 2013 is super low-key and effortlessly pretty.

J Crew Wedding Summer 2013 2

You might think a lightweight linin dress with subtle floral embroidery is far too casual for a bride, but once on (see the last model shot below) it looks elegant, simple and seriously cool. Who wouldn’t want to be that summer bride?

Molly Schaul, the director of wedding design at J.Crew, explains, “For summer we were inspired to use light, romantic fabrics, like embroidered eyelet, linen and swiss-dot chiffon. They’re perfect to add a little fun and texture to your look.”

The J.Crew summer wedding gowns all make a big impact, but they’re in no way fussy or overly-formal. My personal favourites include Angelique, Rosebloom and Corrina. If I was a bride-to-be I’d find it difficult to chose between them. So maybe I’m more interested in wedding dresses that I originally thought…

Introducing Joanna Pybus and Her Kooky ‘Furry Face’ Clutch Bags

Joanna Pybus

I love a statement accessory and am constantly on the look-out for quirky and unique designs. So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Joanna Pybus‘ furry face clutch bags on BENGT. The young London-based designer has savvily added affordable accessories to her namesake label (now in its second season), which will no doubt boost her profile. Joanna’s ready-to-wear designs are bold and print-heavy, so the full head-to-toe look may not work for everyone, but her playful clutch bags and totes are an failsafe way to buy into the collection. Team them with low-key outfits – a little black dress or indigo jeans and a white T-shirt – for maximum impact. Sure, they’re totally bonkers, but why should fashion be so serious?

My personal favourite is the multi-coloured clutch, and I’m hoping a Cookie Monster-blue design will be introduced for A/W 2013. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Let me know if you like the look of Joanna Pybus’ designs too…

Introducing Vilshenko: Speaking to the Woman Behind the New Russian Label to Love {Exclusive}

The Russian fashion scene is in the spotlight more so than ever, right now, thanks to street style icons like Miroslava Duma and Ulyana Sergeenko. Never one to miss out on a trend, I caught up with one of Moscow’s hottest new design talents, Olga Vilshenko, to discuss her Spring/Summer 2013 collection and the differences between British and Russian fashion. Read on for the exclusive interview and a selection of my favourite Vilshenko SS13 looks…

Olga Vilshenko
Olga Vilshenko | The Spring/Summer 2013 Vilshenko collection

What’s the story behind Vilshenko? When did you start designing?
I’ve always had a passion for design. In my family, garment manufacturing was a long-standing family tradition and I’m no exception. I started out when I was a kid helping my mom to make things and then continued studying design at the university (Olga attended the Institue of Fashion and Art in Russia, and London’s Istituto Marangoni).

Who is the Vilshenko woman?
The Vilshenko woman is chic and intelligent.  She knows what’s best for her and is practical when it comes to choosing designs – fit, quality and comfort come first.

Russian fashion is in the spotlight more than ever, right now. Why do you think it’s suddenly having a moment?
We have been in the shadows for the last couple of decades fashion-wise, and now when so many new talents are emerging we’re proud to show what has been behind the scene for so many years.

Vilshenko

You split your time between London and Moscow. Have you noticed a big difference in the two fashion scenes?
The Moscow fashion scene has only begun to establish itself over the past several years, so I guess this is why, for so many brands, the Russian market is very important. We are happy to embrace all things new. In London the variety of items sold is amazing. Also, London is more famous for its love of mix-and-matching and vintage clothing.

Print plays a big part in your collections, especially for Spring/Summer 2013. Where do get your inspiration from?
My prints come mostly from art, paintings, crafts I see and get inspired from. As for spring/summer 2013, my inspiration was Zhostovo – Russian craft of painting on tin with a special pattern. My other inspirations were traditional sundresses and aprons, as well as Russian scarves.

Vilshenko Spring Summer 2013

Are there any women you would particularly like to see wearing Vilshenko?
There are so many – Natalia Vodianova, Mila Lovovitch, Carine Roitfeld…

And finally… What’s your favourite piece from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection?
If I had to choose, that would be this gorgeous maxi lame lurex skirt, it’s great for summer and I love how versatile it is.  You can wear it to every occasion, from work to a dinner date and it would be just perfect.

Bottega Veneta Resort 2014 is a Lesson in Fuss-Free Summer Dressing

It’s difficult to know what to wear at the moment, as it’s almost summer but not quite. Interestingly, the Resort/Pre-Fall 2014 collections have just started to drop (I know, I know… fashion moves so fast), and the Bottega Veneta lookbook has some styling ideas which would work for the current weather. Take look two as an example. It’s feminine, fuss-free, has a hint of Elle Fanning cool about it (probably because of the choice of model), and isn’t trend-driven whatsoever. It’s easily my favourite outfit from the Bottega Veneta Resort 2014 collection. I’ll definitely be copying the style this summer!

What Should Emma Watson Wear to the Cannes Film Festival?

Sofia Coppola’s much anticipated movie, The Bling Ring, will open the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Which means her latest leading-lady, Emma Watson, will be in attendance. Woo! The 23-year-old actress has kept a fairly low profile since The Perks of Being a Wallflower was released, last year, so I’m looking forward to her red carpet return. Emma will need a showstopping couture gown for The Bling Ring premiere, and a few summery looks for photocalls and interviews. Here are four Spring/Summer 2013 designs that I’d like to see her rocking in Cannes…

Emma’s new movie, The Bling Ring, is released this summer. It’s about a group of teenagers in LA who track celebrities online and then rob their homes while they’re out of town. It may sound crazy but it’s based on a true story! Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Audrina Patridge and Rachel Bilson were all targeted in the 2009 burglaries. Take a look at the trailer to see Emma Watson in action as one of the Bling Ring teens, Nicki…

It will be interesting to see Emma Watson in a very un-Hermione role, and from the look of the trailer she plays the spoilt Valley Girl very well. Also, I’m pretty sure that actually is Paris Hilton’s LA home, and that she does indeed have her face printed on cushions. Seriously strange…

Are you excited about Sofia Coppola’s new movie, The Bling Ring? What would you like to see Emma Watson wearing on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet? Let me know…
