Trend Driven: Snakeskin Takes Centre Stage For Spring 2013

For some unknown reason I always think of Shania Twain when snakeskin is mentioned. As far as I can remember she never had a crazy head-to-toe snake moment to rival Britney and Justin’s denim extravaganza, but I always feel like she would have done… or should have done! There’s still time for Shania, however, as the Spring/Summer 2013 collections paid homage to the year of the snake. Designers experimented with snakeskin and snake print leather, mixing it together with acidic brights, delicate lace and feminine shapes. It was unexpected, but looks surprisingly cool…

Snakeskin Spring Summer 2013

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez used snakeskin to great effect at Proenza Schouler. The S/S 2013 show played with collage techniques, pairing patches of lime snake with yellow leather and fusing neutral python prints with a glossy, flame red. In London Erdem Moralioglu was concocting his own eye-catching combination. He added a lace overlay to snakeskin, and sliced it together with elegant pastel shades. It’s easily one of the standout collections from the season.

If you’re a fan of the snakeskin look search for colourful pieces that can be worn with a variety of different items. I like Equipment’s bright blue cashmere sweater and Topshop’s snake-wrap lace dress. Both items will score major fashion points!

Gemma Arterton Wows in Erdem and Veronica Lake Waves

British actress Gemma Arterton definitely doesn’t get enough attention. Her red carpet style is polished, glamourous and never lacks variety. Gemma is currently promoting the action/fantasy thriller, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and whilst the film itself is of no interest to me I’ve been following the promotional tour closely. So far Gemma has worn Nina Ricci polka-dots, a patterned Vivienne Westwood number and a sexy LBD by Gucci. My favourite look, however, has to be the floral Erdem dress, which the 27-year-old wore to the Sydney premiere, yesterday. It was a truly magnificent choice…

I also think it’s Gemma’s strongest beauty look (so far, at least) as the Veronica Lake-style waves perfectly complement the Erdem design. The hair-slide is also a really nice touch too – simple, but very effective. I must invest in some good hair accessories, this season. Are also you a fan of Gemma Arterton’s style? Do you like her floral Erdem dress?

Fashion’s Latest Colour Obsession: Pretty Pink Shades

A few weeks ago you may remember a rumour started to circulate online, suggesting Anna Wintour had asked all Vogue editors to wear pink to the Met Gala. That may sound like a bizarre request, but pink is having a moment again, and Anna sure knows it! The Vogue staffers and celebrity guests who dressed in pretty shades of fuchsia, coral and cerise did indeed look fabulous on the Met red carpet. So the moral of the story? Wear pink, of course.
SHOP THE EDIT:

Pink was a key colour throughout the Spring/Summer 2012 collections (probably because it always looks great with a tan) and it’s sticking around for Autumn/Winter, as well. If pink is usually too girly for your taste try contrasting it with red, like Emma Stone, or take inspiration from Erdem and give it a gothic twist with black lace. There are so many possibilities…

Is pink currently one of your favourite colours to wear? How do you usually style it?

Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 at the V&A

It’s a big year for Britain, with both the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. To mark the occasion the V&A museum is pulling out all the stops with their latest fashion exhibition, Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950. Yesterday I visited the V&A’s newly renovated fashion galleries (which, to me, looked exactly the same as they always did) for a preview of the Ballgowns exhibition.

The exhibition is split into two sections: downstairs you find your traditional ballgowns, with designs by the likes of Norman Hartnell and Worth of London, then upstairs you’re treated to three magnificent domes filled with red carpet dresses. Shailene Woodley’s Met Gala dress, designed by Christopher Kane is there, as is the Jenny Packham number Sandra Bullock wore to the 2011 Golden Globes.

A few of the designs on display are very recent runway pieces (my favourite look from Mary Katrantzou’s A/W 2011 collection is featured, as is a piece from Holly Fulton’s A/W 2011 line) so you’ll definitely spot something you recognise. The modern section of the exhibition is also arranged so that you can walk around the designs and view the pieces from all angles, which is a nice touch. Personally I felt it upstaged the traditional gowns, which weren’t displayed in such a spectacular or imaginative fashion. It’s a shame, as they are just as show-stopping.

Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 opens on May 19th, and runs until January 2013. Adult tickets cost £10 and entry for students is £7. If you you’re not visiting London then check out the official exhibition book, Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950, which is available on Amazon, and at the V&A giftshop. More images from the exhibition after the jump…

The Top Six Floral Prints for Fall 2011

You would be forgiven if you thought that polka dots and stars were the only prints on offer this Autumn/Winter. They’re not, though. Florals are also having a moment. But florals are always having a moment, I hear you scream. We all know the Miranda Priestly line – “Florals? For spring? Ground breaking” – but these are not your average itty-bitty summer florals. These are Winter Florals, a fully-fledged trend that is a little bit gothic. They’re not girly flowers, they’re pretty, but in a dark way.
Here are six of the best floral looks from the Autumn/Winter 2011 collections:

I would love to see someone brave the bold Jil Sander and Paul Smith looks on the red carpet (bizarrely Bonnie Wright comes to mind) and I’m obsessed with the sheer Sportmax dress. Pair it with a parka and you’d look soooo Kate Moss in the ’90s.

Are you a fan of winter florals? Which is your favourite collection? And how will you be wearing this trend come fall?

Miss Selfridge’s Fabulous Lily Print Collection

Who doesn’t love Erdem? If I could I would buy pretty much every piece from the beautiful S/S 2011 collection. Sadly my budget won’t stretch to that, but I was pleased to see that the Miss Selfridge ‘Lily’ print - which is very Erdem S/S – has been used in three fabulous pieces. The maxi, mini dress and wide-legged trousers aren’t direct copies of Erdem’s looks (the Miss Selfridge team are far too talented for any of that business) but they do effectively capture the same mood and are great alternatives for smaller budgets. The maxi dress is my personal favourite.

Style them up with natural hair and makeup and trusted basics (the trousers are so jazzy they only need a white t-shirt) to capture the Erdem spirit.

Are you a big Erdem fan? Like the Miss Selfridge take on the look?
