The 5 Day Lipstick Challenge

Weekday Lipstick Challenge

I’m not a hoarder. It’s simply not in my nature. In fact, I’m quite the opposite and love nothing more than a good decluttering session. However, I do have a problem when it comes to lipstick. It’s not that I hold onto shades that I don’t like. Instead, the issue is that I have a well-edited collection that rarely gets used. Lipstick is the final step in my makeup routine, and I regularly gets forgotten.

However, this year I’m making a conscious effort to wear the lip colours I love more often. And I decided a challenge would set me up on the right path. So I vowed to wear a different lipstick every day for a full workweek, and here’s how I got on with the #5DayLipstickChallenge…

5 Day Lipstick Challenge

I decide to ease into the week with a subtle, rose-pink shade from the new Hourglasses GIRL collection. “Creator” isn’t too far from my natural lip colour, and seems like a sensible choice considering I’ll be spending the entire day at my desk in minimal makeup. The fact that it’s such a fuss-free shade actually works against me though, and I forget to re-apply it throughout the day. So I realise this experiment will only work if I start choosing bolder lip colours.

Taking yesterday’s experience into consideration I select and old favourite today: “Sexy Sienna” by Charlotte Tilbury. It’s a soft, coral hue that was inspired by Sienna Miller. Because of the matte texture it holds pretty solidly throughout the day, so I only have to top up the colour once or twice. I’d actually forgotten how much I love this shade, and it puts a real spring in my step. I promise myself I’ll make an effort to wear it more often and bring it to the front of my lipstick storage container.

Dolce Gabbana Dolce Rosa Lipstick

Today I have an appointment with my hair colourist, who always wears the most beautiful magenta lipsticks. So, taking inspiration from Amelia, I also opt for a pop of pink. However, I’m not very comfortable in bold or deep pinks, so wear for Dolce & Gabbana’s “Dolce Rosa”, which is more of a bubblegum hue. At lunchtime I realise I’d totally be allowed to sit with the Plastics in Mean Girls, because “on Wednesdays we wear pink,” and that inspires me to stay on top of lipstick re-application throughout the day.

I’m hosting a blogging workshop at a Garnier event this afternoon, so want to make sure I’m 100% comfortable with my lipstick choice because I’ll be presenting to a room full of people. I choose one of my favourite nudes, “Rouge Ingénue” by Chanel, which has subtle red undertones. And because the Rouge Allure formula is super-nourishing I remember to re-apply the colour every hour or so, because it doubles up as a balm. Slowly but surely I’m getting better at this lipstick malarkey…

Coco's Tea Party Lipstick Challenge

I have a full day of meetings today, and will be teaming up with Monica Welburn for many of them. This gives me the confidence to opt for a red lip, because I trust she’ll tell me if it smudges or ends up on my teeth. “Jungle Red” by Nars is my all-time favourite red, and it feels great to wear a colour I love so dearly. Luckily I make it through the day with minimal smudging, and decide I must wear bold colours more often. So I deem this experiment a success!

I’m going to repeat the weekday lipstick challenge this week, so check-in on Twitter and Instagram Stories to see how I’m getting on. If you would like to join me for round two, share your daily lipstick choices with the hashtag #5DayLipstickChallenge.
