5 of the Best… High Street Backpacks

Backpacks Spring 2014 Trend

Last season at London Fashion Week it felt like if you weren’t wearing a pink coat you didn’t belong in the cool crowd. And when the Autumn/Winter 2014 shows kick off on February 14th I have a feeling the same thing will happen again; only this time around the ‘It’ item will be backpacks…

Rucksacks have been back in fashion for a few seasons, and their rise can mostly be credited to The Row’s $39,000 alligator skin design (never doubt Mary-Kate and Ashley’s fashion influence), as well as the current nineties nostalgia. And, for Spring/Summer 2014, the trend has definitely reached its peak.

I’ve always turned my nose up at backpacks – even as a child I never wanted to use one as a school bag – so I’ve ignored this trend for as long as possible. However, the current crop of fashion-forward designs at Elizabeth and James, Alexander Wang and Jérôme Dreyfuss have certainly calmed my life-long hatred for practical style. In fact, I’d actually consider carrying one now.

But that doesn’t mean I’m willing to splash out on this trend. Instead I’ll be sticking to the high street, just in case backpacks have a short shelf-life. Luckily there are some really brilliant designs available at the moment, and here are five of the very best…

Backpack Trend Topshop ASOS River Island Whistles

Shop the Edit: Blue leather fold-up backpack by ASOS and ASOS USA | Black quilted rucksack by River Island | White perforated backpack by Topshop and Topshop USA | Caramel leather backpack by ASOS and ASOS USA | Black leather backpack by Whistles

My favourite styles are the River Island quilted style and ASOS’ electric blue backpack. However, if you’re willing to spend a bit more on this look, you can’t go wrong with Whilstles’ black leather design. It may be pricey at £295, but it does look like it could be from The Row or Alexander Wang…

Are you a fan of Spring/Summer 2014’s backpacks? Which high street styles are your favourites?

  • Hmm, I like the black quilted one and the caramel one as well..Good choices!
