Must-Buy Summer Essential: The Straw Bag

Alessandra Codinha Straw bag

There’s a certain image from The Sartorialist that hasn’t left my Pinterest feed all summer. Every day, without fail, someone else adds it to their virtual pin board – making it almost as popular as pineapples and quinoa salads. The photo shows Vogue.com Fashion News Editor Alessandra Codinha strolling through New York wearing a simple jersey dress, tan sandals and a straw bag. And – no exaggeration – it’s probably the most beautiful summer outfit to ever walk the planet!

The straw handbag is what takes it from pretty to perfect, and for weeks I’ve been obsessively searching for a lookalike tote. Sadly it’s slim pickings out there (clearly retailers aren’t feeling the raffia handbag love like Pinterest users), but I’ve narrowed the search down to six options. Take a look…

1. Marks and Spencer // 2. J.Crew // 3. Bop Basics // 4. M Missoni // 5. Topshop // 6. Topshop

The M&S, J.Crew and Bop Basics styles are classics that will never date, but I’m also loving the more colourful offerings from Topshop and M Missoni. (I have the M Missoni shoulder bag in green.)

Style the look as Alessandra and Olivia Palermo do, with low-key summer dresses, tan or nude shoes and a few well-placed gold accessories. It’s a fool-proof way to look fabulous this summer!

Straw bags always look so relaxed and chic. I’m on the lookout for my own option.

Straw bags are such a great summery accent to any ensemble! We love how they can be easily dressed up or down depending on the look!
