It’s Magnum’s 25th birthday, and to celebrate the occasion Henry Holland has designed a party dress inspired by their delicious ice creams. The dress [above right] features a cracking chocolate effect, which was created using couture-level embellishments, and you have the chance to WIN the design in your dress size.
To be in with a chance of winning the dress you simply need to head to the Coco’s Tea Party Facebook page and take part in a mini styling challenge. The competition is open to residents of the UK and Ireland only and closes on April 8th*.
And read on for my exclusive interview with Henry Holland. I caught up with the designer last week, before the big Magnum birthday party, to discuss the collaboration…
Hi Henry. So, first things first, when Magnum asked you to design a dress inspired by their ice creams how did you begin?
Well, it’s not an everyday brief. We started off by playing with some quite literal ideas – the two iconic things about the Magnum are the curvature of the edges and the cracking chocolate. So I sketched a lot of different shapes and ideas, and decided to go with the cracking concept and recreate that effect using sequins.
Did you design the dress with the House of Holland girl in mind?
Completely. We wanted it to reflect our aesthetic, so it’s quite a bold, simplistic shape. In my collections we use simple shapes as a grounding for prints, and in this case it acts as a grounding for all that embellishment. And the peaked collar was a shape that we had in our Autumn/Winter 2014 show.
If this dress went down your runway how would you style it?
I think you’d have to leave this piece as it is and just add some killer shoes. Maybe some jewellery on the wrist too, but nothing on the neck. Because there’s a lot going on with this dress it would be a shame to cover it with a jacket.
How did you find the couture experience?
The budget was so big that we could really go for it in terms of fabrications, and we chose to create something really strong and embellished. Working alongside the embellishment house was really nice, because we work with them on my runway collections, but we’re always very much focused on what we’re able to do because of costs. And this was all about the techniques, so it gave me a chance to try different ideas. We just went wild with it!
This project celebrates Magnum’s 25th Anniversary, and I wondered how you celebrated your 25th birthday…
I tend to have a birthday party once a week for about three months and really drag it out when it’s my birthday. But for my 25th I went to my mum’s house in France with a group of friends, which I do every year for my birthday. And I would have had a party in London as well, because if you go away on your actual birthday then you have to have another party once you get home!
And finally, how many Magnum ice creams do you think you’ve eaten during the design process?
Two. They very kindly sent me several cooler bags full of them, but by the time I get to the cooler bags the little scavengers in the office have already finished them all! So I’ve only ever managed one with each delivery. The almond flavour is my favourite.
