Shopping For: Tropical Prints That Don’t Look Totally Cheesy

Tropical Prints Trend Spring 2014

1. Watercolour print slippers at Topshop and Topshop USA

2. Moschino Cheap and Chic palm tree shirt at Net-A-Porter

3. Venessa Arizaga ‘Lei Lady Lei’ necklace at Matches Fashion

4. Patchwork skinny jeans at Karen Millen and Karen Millen USA

5. Matthew Williamson songbird print shorts at Net-A-Porter and Net-A-Porter USA

6. River Island floral stripe bowler bag

Have you noticed there are a lot of tropical prints floating around in stores at the moment? The same thing happened last spring/summer, and the year before that, and both times I managed to avoid the trend completely. It’s hard to wear tropical prints and Hawaiian shirts without looking seriously cheesy, but this season the look has been toned down a notch and is much more wearable.

I’d happily pair Moschino Cheap and Chic’s palm print shirt with Karen Millen’s patchwork skinny jeans and Venessa Arizaga’s beautiful ‘Lei Lady Lei’ necklace. And River Island’s bowler bag is a fab buy if you’d prefer to hint to the look with a statement accessory. Will you be giving the tropical trend a go this season?

P.S Hawaiian shirts always remind me of Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo + Juliet. The design he wore actually wasn’t very tropical at all when you look back (it had more of a kimono influence), but I thought we could all enjoy this GIF anyway. Leonardo DiCaprio circa 1996 is my favourite…

P.P.S I’ve finally got into Homeland so am also experiencing major love for Claire Danes right now!

Leo is still the first thing I think of when I think of Hawaiian shirts.
