As we all know, the September and March issues come with the most hype, as they introduce the new season collections and have the largest amount pages (most of which are ads). But I’ve always loved the April issues, because it’s the month of my birthday. Remember Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s ELLE UK covers? That was an April issue, and I convinced myself it was a birthday gift to me from Hearst!
And speaking of Hearst, they’re having a great month. My favourite April 2014 covers are all from their selection of publications. Katie Holmes posed for ELLE UK, and the results are beautiful, whilst Red magazine hit the jackpot with their Winona Ryder cover…
… And then there’s Sarah Jessica Parker’s Harper’s Bazaar UK cover, which no one will be forgetting in a hurry. I love the showgirl styling! Outside of Hearst, another April highlight is Claudia Shiffer for Vogue Germany. It’s not how we’re used to seeing the supermodel, but the androgynous styling is a really pleasant surprise and looks fantastic.
Lena Dunham has bagged another major cover this month, posing for Glamour US. Personally I preferred her Vogue portrait, but I don’t have anything negative to say about Glamour’s editorial. Lea Michele’s Glamour UK cover is also quite pleasing, but I still have little-to-no interest in her. Let’s hope the UK edition runs a reprint of Lena’s cover this summer, as I’m much more excited to hear what she has to say.
The cover everyone will be talking about this month is Kanye West and Kim Kardashian for US Vogue. The couple were photographed together by Annie Leibovitz and I actually think it’s a lovely image. You may not like the fact Kim Kardashian is on the cover of Vogue, but I’m sure this will be their bestselling issue all year. By a long run. Anna Wintour is no fool, after all… (P.S yay for Mindy Kaling!)
Lara Stone is back from maternity leave, and looks absolutely beautiful on the US edition Harper’s Bazaar. The minimalist styling might not appeal to everyone, but I like the low-key ’90s vibe. What I am bored of, however, is the ‘fabulous at every age’ feature. When will Harper’s put this tired feature to bed? Anyway, over at Flare Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke posed in a pastel pink Burberry design…
And there was more Burberry Prorsum action over at British Vogue; this time with Nigella Lawson modelling. I’m not overly keen on her cover, which feels a bit flat, but I was excited to see Jourdan Dunn covering Miss Vogue. Let’s hope this means a proper Vogue cover is on the horizon, because Jourdan deserves the honour.
The Game of Thrones cast were photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair‘s April edition. As I don’t watch the show, much of this cover’s appeal is lost on me, but I know a lot of people who are really excited about this issue! And over at Vogue Paris Cameron Russell posed for Mario Testino’s lens. It’s the first VP cover I’ve liked in a long time.
Emma Waston posed in a double denim ensemble for US ELLE‘s April issue. The cover doesn’t really inspire me to pick up a copy, but I always like seeing Emma in the glossies and I’m sure this will have lots of newsstand appeal. The same goes for Amanda Seyfried’s W cover. It’s pretty and has all the ingredients for a winning cover, but somehow it hasn’t wowed me.
