In an ideal world my hair would look like Elle Macpherson’s, with honey highlights and long, beachy waves. But, unfortunately, my hair is so fine that once it grows past my shoulders it starts to look flat, lank and unhealthy. The only way I’m ever going to achieve Elle’s mermaid style is through extensions – and that involves a lot of money, patience and regular maintenance. One day I might commit to a full-on Macpherson makeover, but in the meantime it’s all about finding my “happy hair length”, which brings me to the Josh Wood Atelier in Notting Hill…
I visited the Atelier last week for an appointment with Joanna Dobrowolska, who introduced me to the “happy hair length”. She persuaded me to ignore all trends and celebrity influences and instead focus on the cut that’s going to bring out the best in my locks. So – working with my hair, rather than against it – Joanna chopped off a good 3-4 inches. She also advised against too much layering, which would make my hair look even finer, and opted for a subtle graduated style to create the illusion of thickness.
Shoulder length hair is not exactly the dream, and I couldn’t pass for a mermaid, but it certainly looks much more flattering than before! Don’t you agree?
Also, whilst Joanna was blow drying my hair, I had a quick chat with the Trichologist that works at the Atelier. No idea what a Trichologist does? Well I didn’t either. Basically, they pull out a strand of your hair and analyse it under a microscope to identify emotional, nutritional, hormonal, environmental and genetic factors that are affecting the health and condition of your hair and scalp. Once they even informed a client that she was pregnant. It’s crazy how much your hair says about you.
I’m currently waiting for my results – I’ll keep you posted on what I find out…
