Awards Season 2014: My Top 10 Best Dressed Stars

It’s pretty upsetting that Awards Season 2014 has come to an end. Sure, we still have the Cannes Film Festival and the Met Gala to look forward to, but I’m going to miss the back-to-back red carpet appearances. I’ve got used to seeing Lupita Nyong’o on a near-daily basis, so I might start experiencing withdrawal symptoms if she goes under the radar. To spread out the joy a little longer I’ve compiled my complete Awards Season Best Dressed list. So here, ranked in order, are my ten favourite red carpet looks…

Amy Adams Roland Mouret Critics Choice Awards

1. Amy Adams in Roland Mouret at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards: This may cause a few disagreements, but Amy’s hot pink Roland Mouret gown was definitely my favourite red carpet look, this season. It’s a shame she wasted it on the Critics’ Choice Awards and didn’t save it for the Oscars.

Lupita Nyong'o Ralph Lauren Golden Globes

2. Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren at the Golden Globes: It blended into the carpet, but that’s my only complaint here. Lupita wowed this season, and her first appearance remains the most iconic.

Amy Adams Antonio Berardi SAG Awards

3. Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi at the SAG Awards

Caitlin FitzGerald Emilia Wickstead Golden Globes

4. Caitlin FitzGerald in Emilia Wickstead at the Golden Globes: I barely even know who Caitlin FitzGerald is (she’s in Masters of Sex, which I haven’t watched, and played Meryl Streep’s daughter in It’s Complicated), but her Golden Globes look was one of the most memorable Awards Season appearances. Proof, once and for all, that you don’t have to be on the A-list to look fabulous at these events.

Lupita Nyong'o Prada Oscar Dress

5. Lupita Nyong’o in Prada at the Academy Awards

Rita Ora Prada BRIT Awards

6. Rita Ora in Prada at the BRIT Awards: Never in a million years would I have expected to feature Rita Ora an Awards Season Best Dressed list, but she absolutely nailed it at the BRIT Awards. This canary yellow Prada gown is too beautiful for words.

Amy Adams Valentino Golden Globes

7. Amy Adams in Valentino at the Golden Globes

Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie BAFTAs 2014

8. Angelina Jolie in Saint Laurent at the BAFTA Awards: Only Angelina Jolie could arrive at the BAFTA Awards wearing a tux and make you completely forget about all other looks on the red carpet. She is on a whole new level of awesome!

Cate Balnchett Armani Prive Oscars 2014

9. Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive at the Academy Awards

Lupita Nyong'o Calvin Klein Critics Choice Awards

10. Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Let me know if you agree with my top 10 and please feel free to share your Awards Season Best Dressed lists in the comments. I love hearing which looks you loved.

P.S Can we talk about the fact Jennifer Lawrence didn’t make it into the top 10 once? This makes me really sad :(

My number one has to be Amy Adams’ Valentino from the GG (with the matching cape on) with Lupita’s blue Gucci from the SAG awards a close second. Cate Blanchett’s Oscar dress is in the top 3 as well. Other memorable looks include Angie’s tux, Lupita’s white Calvin Klein and Amy’s Oscar gown (which I prefer over the Antonio Berardi from the SAG Awards).

It’s such a shame Amy took the cape off at the Globes! Had she kept it on that might have been my number 1 as well.

I think you picked out some great looks here! And I agree with you that J-Law has possibly not had her *best* awards season. I think her contractual obligation to Dior is becoming a little problematic (apparently her Oscars dress was a second choice/back up as she was supposed to be in vintage Dior) and I really hope that we don’t find Lupita in a similar situation – she’s been providing some of the best red carpet moments this awards season!

    • cocos_tea_party

I agree. And I also think she looked much better when she was working with Elizabeth Stewart. She moved to Rachel Zoe during Awards Season 2013, and I don’t think the magics there any more.

      • pinkschmink

Ah! I didn’t realise she’d gone Zoe on us. That explains a lot, like why there have been a lot more ‘safe’ choices. I remember seeing Emma Watson’s Dior outfit at the Globes and thinking, “Jennifer Lawrence should have worn that.”

        • cocos_tea_party

YES! It looks great on Emma, but it would have been AMAZING if Jennifer had turned up in that. Jennifer is now one of Rachel’s only clients – Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore and Anne Hathaway have all left her. I think she’s probably less a stylist and more of a designer/brand/celebrity now anyway.

Lupita gets it right everytime! Flawless beauty.

J-law has also been laying low this awards season, as she purposefully didn’t want to win the Oscar for fear of (very likely) backlash – especially as she will have so much promo at the end of the year with Xmen and Mockingjay. Therefore the low keys looks are likely to also be a very strategic decision. This post explains it quite well: http://www.celebitchy.com/353857/jennifer_lawrence_is_so_happy_she_lost_the_oscar_shes_aware_of_the_backlash/

    • cocos_tea_party

It really annoys me that people are turning on her suddenly. It seems all the things people loved about her last season (her goofiness etc) are now somehow “an act”. It’s such a shame.

      • Jess Child

Agree, but I guess it is par for the course. And good move on her part to lay low to keep the hate to a minimum. Too much of a good thing and all.

        • cocos_tea_party

She’s so talented that I’m sure she’ll be fine. Especially as she’s being smart by keeping a low profile. It’s just very annoying that people love to build people up just to knock them down.

  • Neave

similarly, I STILL have NO clue who Caitlin FitzGerald is, but this dress is one of the greatest dresses I’ve ever seen. She looks amazing! x

    • cocos_tea_party

I hope we see more Emilia Wickstead designs on the red carpet this year as a result.

Definitely agree with you on most of these. Amy Adams and Lupita really did a brilliant job this season. I really loved Kate Hudson at the Oscars, so she’s definitely one I’d add in. Oh I miss awards season already!
