Five Observations From My First Ever Tom Ford Fashion Show

Tom Ford AW14

A few weeks ago I received a very special email, which came completely out of the blue. “Please reserve the evening of February 17th at 7pm for the Tom Ford Fall 2014 womenswear collection presentation in London,” it read. Naturally I did as I was told, and on the evening of February 17th I attended my first ever Tom Ford show. And here are five observations I just had to share with you…

1. Black is the new black. The majority of the Autumn/Winter collection was black, proving once again there really is nothing that looks as chic. Personal highlights included the hooded turtleneck sweaters, the leather pencil skirt and the skinny trousers.

2. There are models and then there are Tom Ford models. Some of the most beautiful and iconic women in the industry walked in this show: Joan Smalls, Karen Elson, Stella Tennant, Liberty Ross and my new favourite face, Betty Adewole. And instead of just walking they strutted out like it was an old school catwalk show, with heaps of attitude (and a few dramatic turns at the end of the runway). It was so much fun to watch.

3. Cowboy boots aren’t just for country music stars. Think you’d never wear a pair of cowboy boots? Well take a look at Tom Ford’s badass stiletto-heeled cowboy boots, which were worn with fishnet stockings, and now tell me how you feel about this look. (I’m all for this style – but then Nashville is my favourite TV show…)

4. There’s no such thing as too much luxury. Upon entering the show venue guests were presented with glasses of champagne. Instead of wooden benches we sat on plush, grey sofas. And the entire room smelt like Tom Ford fragrances.

5. Tom Ford shows have the best soundtracks. The House of Holland playlists always make you want to get up and dance. Burberry Prorsum’s music choices consistently get stuck in your head for at least 48 hours. But, it turns out, all this time Tom Ford has been the king of the runway soundtrack. Don’t believe me? Here are the three songs that accompanied the Autumn/Winter collection…

Just admit it, you’re secretly a country music singer.
