Natalie Portman Shows Us How to Look Chic at Holiday Season Parties

A few weeks ago Natalie Portman was in London to promote Thor: The Dark World (a movie about a superhero who’s really good at hammering?!). For the film’s London premiere Natalie wore a black cashmere knit with a metallic ball skirt, both by Christian Dior. The reason I’m featuring this look now – and not when it originally hit the red carpet – is because I want it to be fresh in your minds for party season. Retailers usually present limited options for Holiday Season parties – and they tend to be sleeveless, drenched in sequins and made from cheap polyester. Hardly tempting.

So this season, instead of wasting money on a slightly-naff party dress you’re only going to wear once, I suggest planning ahead and investing in a party skirt instead. As Natalie showed, a statement skirt paired with a basic knit or long-sleeved T-shirt looks incredibly elegant. It’s also much more practical, as there are tons of styling possibilities and the look isn’t too revealing (who wants to wear a skimpy, pouffy dress when it’s cold outside and you’ve just eaten a whole tin of Celebrations?)

There are some truly beautiful skirts out there, this season, and here are six of the best. Let me know which is your favourite…

Statement Skirt ShortShort Styles: Velvet pencil skirt by Toga | Silver lurex skirt by Topshop | Dark green sequin skirt by Miss Selfridge

And a quick word on accessorising… For cocktail parties channel Natalie Portman, and keep it minimal with delicate earrings, a statement ring and a glitzy clutch. But for dinner parties and family lunches focus on what will be seen above the table, and add a bold necklace to your outfit.

Do you like Natalie Portman’s elegant red carpet look? Would you give the style a go? And have you already been dreading party season dressing? Let me know…

The silver lurex is definitely my favorite of the group. And love Natalie Portman, she always looks so put together and elegant.
