Marie Claire UK celebrates its 25th anniversary this month, and the October issue is not to be missed. Girls star, Lena Dunham, covers the magazine, modelling an Erdem dress. I’m pretty sure this is Lena’s first major cover, and although the accompanying editorial is a bit hit and miss I’m soooo soooo happy to see her profiled. Marie Claire explained their anniversary issue cover choice writing, “As Marie Claire looks to the next 25 years, who else could our birthday cover girl be but the voice of a new generation?”
Apparently Lena herself was surprised to be offered the cover, telling Marie Claire:
“I’m not saying I am a great candidate for the cover of a fashion magazine. But I do love clothes. People are always surprised to hear that – they think I walk around in a washcloth or something. I do think it takes fashion magazine’s a minute to be comfortable with variations of any kind. Adele is one of the most beautiful women in the world, but every time I see her on a cover, it’s like a crop of her face and it’s just so boring at this point. It’s such a boring conversation.”
The 25th anniversary issue also includes really interesting interviews with the magazine’s past editors – including launch editor, Glenda Bailey, who is now editor in chief at Harper’s Bazaar US. The October edition is on newsstands now and I really recommend picking up a copy, especially as we can’t expect glossies to continuously feature a more impressive range of cover stars if we don’t encourage them with high newsstand sales.
