New York Fashion Week isn’t the first place I’d usually look for potential Oscar gowns. Paris? Totally. Milan? Without a doubt. But New York – for me at least – is more about clothes I’m going to want to wear in my everyday, non-celebrity life. However, the NYFW Fall 2013 collections are making a late-bid for the Academy Awards‘ red carpet. Everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Naeem Khan produced designs worthy of the Best Dressed lists, so now all they need is a pretty nominee to give them their moment of glory. Here are six of the most likely Oscar contenders…
Oscar de la Renta‘s embellished black gown isn’t the most attention-grabbing dress out there, but the thigh-slit makes a sexy statement and it’s likely to please the masses. This would be a great option for a presenter, as it’s subtle but still shows you’ve made an effort.
Marchesa will definitely get a dress on the red carpet. I just hope it’s not on Best Actress nominee, Jennifer Lawrence, because she really doesn’t look like a Marchesa girl. Silver Linings Playbook is a Harvey Weinstein production, and he’s married to Georgina Chapman, so it could happen. But hopefully their best dress will go to Amy Adams instead. She’s a fabulous poster-girl for the brand, so it would make more sense.
Jenny Packham’s strapless red design would look lovely on Anne Hathaway. She hasn’t had a red moment yet and the dress would complement her shorter hairstyle. The only problem is Anne’s already worn two strapless, block colour column dresses this season, so this gown may be considered too similar.
A bright orange dress may not be the most sensible choice for the Oscars (I doubt UsWeekly and People would “get it”), but if Zac Posen made this gown in another colour it would be a fabulous red carpet option. It’s seriously flattering and screams of old Hollywood Glamour. Hopefully it gets an outing!
And speaking of unconventional red carpet colours… check out this green Oscar de la Renta design. On the right person this would look incredible. Jessica Chastain and Amy Adams are my top choices, as their red hair and fair complexions will bring this dress to life.
Finally, there’s the ultimate black dress. Designed by Naeem Khan, this fitted gown would look perfect on Naomi Watts – who, by a stroke of luck, happens to be favouring black, this season. It just needs some colourful gemstones to give it a punch, and then it’s ready for the Best Dressed lists.
