Ruby Hammer’s 5 Step Guide to Bollywood Beauty

Last week Netflix hosted a Bollywood Style event to celebrate the vast selection of Bollywood movies available on their service. Chanel’s Indian inspired Métiers d’Art collection [above] has brought Bollywood style into the fashion mainstream, so Netflix asked makeup artist Ruby Hammer to host a Bollywood beauty workshop. You’ll all know Ruby Hammer as one of half of Ruby & Millie, and from her work in glossy magazines, including Vogue India. She gave us an easy 5-step guide to recreating the glamorous leading lady look at home. Here are her top tips:

Step One: The Basics
“Start with a flawless base. I recommend using SteamCream (I have my own limited edition tin launching this September!) 3 in 1 moisturiser to prepare the skin. Leave it to sink in for five minutes and then apply a good foundation and powder finish. I use a selection of blushers from Mac – in pinks, peaches, and corals shades – layered on thickly to create a vibrant glow.

Step Two: Strong Eyebrows
“Every Bollywood star has killer eyebrows. Get your eyebrows threaded by a professional, it really makes all the difference. Every big department store has a brow bars these days – you can get yours done for under £15. Use a matt brow colour with an angled bristle brush. Bobbi Brown Brow Kit comes with it’s own brush and tweezers and the colour lasts all day.”

Step Three: Eyeliner and Lashes
“It can be a simple flick or bold as you feel confident to carry of… My favourites are Bobbi Brown, Mac and RMK gel eyeliners. For mascara you can’t go wrong with Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara.”

Step Four: Bold Colour
“Try the latest Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in gold (the shade is called “Vision”) on eyelids. Guerlain 14 Les Fauves 4 Ecrin Couleurs Palette has four really bold eye shadow colours, perfect for Autumn/Winter 2012. Use Topshop’s deep coloured matt chubby pencils on lips.”

Step Five: Big Hair and Bling
“A Bollywood star wouldn’t dream of going out without luxurious bouncy hair. They spend a lot of money on extensions and treatments. If an up-and-coming starlet was to leave the house with flat hair up in a bun rumours would start that she’s in an ‘art house’ movie! Jewellery is a must have. Big dangly earrings and a statement necklace are a starting point, but get the full effect by adding hair, face, hand, ankle and foot jewellery for an authentic Bollywood look.”
