Recently I’ve been watching lots of Michael Jackson videos on Youtube. As a child I was an obsessive mega fan, and I’ve never really grown out of it. It means I’m constantly on the look out for designs that channel MJ’s signature style (you should see me at press days, constantly telling PRs “that’s so Michael Jackson!” and then trying to assure them it’s a compliment). So when I saw Balmain’s Resort 2013 collection I was really impressed with the design direction.
The Michael Jackson elements are all there, but toned down and fashioned up. Check out the high-waisted, loose trousers, which are cuffed just below the ankle so your heels get maximum attention. Then there are the oversized blazers, Bad-style leathers and statement metal belts.
The Michael Jackson influences have been visible at Balmain for a few years now (who could forget Christophe Decarnin’s military jackets?), but I’m feeling much more inspired by the the softer approach from new creative director, Olivier Rousteing. Perhaps it’s because the Resort collection was officially inspired by Miami, giving the over-the-top rock and roll vibe a welcome burst of sunshine, in the form of pleating and pastel tones. Whatever it is, it’s working…
Do you like Balmain’s Resort 2013 collection? Are you inspired by Michael Jackson’s style?
